The issue we can find when battling and managing our mental illness is we try to completely stop feeling any negative emotions, in this we end up making things worse for ourselves when life gives us something to actually feel a negative emotion towards.
When we try to deny and refuse any negative emotion this is how we get stuck in it; we start to feel ashamed, sad and disappointed that we have felt a negative emotion again.
But you are entitled to all emotions; some are negative, some are positive. What matters is when trying to get a better understanding of the emotion that you feel at the time and ask yourself ‘Am I just feeling an emotion or is it taking over? Are all my thoughts and feelings directed towards or reflective of this emotion?’
It can be hard to differentiate whether what you’re feeling is an overreaction or reasonable emotion. If something causes you happiness, sadness, anger, distress, jealousy or whatever emotion – it causes you that emotion.
Emotion is human.
Do not punish yourself for feeling an emotion.
But do not allow the emotion to spread through your mind like a virus and stop you from being happy.
Acknowledge an emotion for what it is and if you need to feel better, do what you can to ensure you are.
Don’t get trapped.
Because you’re worth so much more than that.
But do not be afraid of negative emotion, sometimes we need it to help us build into better people.
